Ocean

“Ocean” is a series of sixty images based on a newspaper photograph of a seascape. I have chosen to work in the relatively fragile medium of film (Imagon- light-sensitive photo-emulsion transferred into a copper plate, than exposed and etched), which allowed me to rework and manipulate the structure of the image. By removing certain parts of the basic photograph, differentiating the exposure, etching and printing processes I was able to generate a number of variations of the original seascape. As a result, each single image of the series is only a fragmentary, very inaccurate, reduced and subjective reflection on the “objective” reality of basic photograph. The work refers to the notion of memory as a constant repetition, internal reconstruction of reality passed. In that context recollections are artificial constructs: the representation can only be partial and subjective, and meaning must be pieced together, like memories, through isolated fragments.
